Intent
The intent of our PSHE curriculum is to enable our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. It aims to help children understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. At St. Mary’s school, we provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community. Integrated within our PSHE curriculum, our intent is to build up children’s well-being and to promote mental health awareness as children develop strategies to become resilient.
At St. Mary’s, RSE is about understanding that we are created and loved by God, created to love others and created to live in community. We explore the importance of stable and loving relationships and what they look like, as well as learning about how to look after ourselves and the changes we go through as we grow up.7
Our PSHE/RSE teaches: -
- Physical health and emotional well-being
- Personal relationships
- Family structures
- Trusted adults
- Puberty and life-cycles
- Dangers of social-media
- Understanding of common good and living in the wider world
- Vocation and becoming active members of a democratic society
Implementation
Our PSHE curriculum is embedded in our whole school long term plan, with additional celebration weeks throughout the year: - such as mental health weeks, anti-bullying weeks, careers week and money week. The RSE curriculum is a two-year progressive rolling programme that uplevels skills and embeds knowledge. We follow the 'Life to the Full' Catholic scheme, written by an award-winning company called 'Ten Ten'. Our children are taught lessons that are aimed at Catholic Primary schools and approved by the Catholic Church.
