Salary:  Grade 3, £26,409 - £32,654 pro rata (actual salary £22,239 - £28,134)

The role:

We are looking to appoint a Teaching Assistant, who will work in partnership with classroom teachers to differentiate appropriate support for pupils, including those pupils with specific or complex Special Educational Needs. 

We are looking for a level of competence to support pupils across the key stages.

Successful candidates will be highly motivated, positive and enthusiastic, love working with children and helping them to strive to achieve against their targets.

The successful candidate should

  • Be able to develop positive relationships with all children
  • Support the activities of individuals or groups
  • Be able to stay calm and objective when presented with unusual or challenging behaviour
  • Promote children’s social and emotional development
  • Contribute to the health and well-being of pupils
  • Provide support for bilingual / multilingual pupils
  • Support children with specific needs for example sensory and/or physical impairment, cognitive or learning difficulties; behavioural; moderate to severe SEND needs, including autism, ADHD, behavioural, social and emotional learning difficulties, speech and language needs
  • Support children with literacy and numeracy skills
  • Support children to access the curriculum
  • Be enthusiastic and committed to working as part of a team

·       Be a confident and clear communicator with parents

  • Have GCSEs or equivalent level, including at least a Grade 4 (previously Grade C) in English and Maths

You must be willing to:

  • support and uphold our Catholic ethos
  • contribute to the planning and evaluation of learning activities
  • design and prepare resources to support language development and understanding as well as resources to support children with difficulties in cognition and learning
  • implement strategies as recommended by professionals, e.g. Speech and Language Therapist, which might include, but are not limited to, teaching language through categorisation tasks and games, sequencing activities, pre and post tutoring of key vocabulary, and using a phonological and semantic approach when teaching new vocabulary.
  • work in consultation with the class teacher to create an environment which is conducive to a learning environment for all: - language rich, in terms of spoken language and the use of complementary communication systems such as visual symbols; challenges
  • lead interventions that target reading comprehension, word reading, and spelling; and maths
  • Cover a whole class for a short time (in an emergency for a period normally less than a whole lesson) or for a very short period of planned absence.

Essential criteria:

  • NVQ3 or equivalent
  • A high standard of spoken English 
  • high expectations and a strong commitment to raising standards
  • work with initiative and be self-reliant when appropriate
  • a high standard of general education with good numeracy and literacy skills

Desired criteria:

  • Have experience working with a range of children and abilities, including those with SEND on both a 1:1 basis or within the general classroom environment
  • Knowledge of the Early Years, KS1, KS2 curriculum
  • confident in using ICT to support children
  • Knowledge of teaching phonics and early mathematics
  • Experience supporting children with moderate to severe SEND needs including autism, ADHD, behavioural, social and emotional learning difficulties, speech and language needs

This post is covered by Part 7 of the Immigration Act (2016) and therefore the ability to speak fluent and spoken English is an essential requirement for this role.
